Google
This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project
to make the world's books discoverable online.
It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject
to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books
are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.
Marks, notations and other maiginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the
publisher to a library and finally to you.
Usage guidelines
Google is proud to partner with libraries to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible. Public domain books belong to the
public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing tliis resource, we liave taken steps to
prevent abuse by commercial parties, including placing technical restrictions on automated querying.
We also ask that you:
+ Make non-commercial use of the files We designed Google Book Search for use by individuals, and we request that you use these files for
personal, non-commercial purposes.
+ Refrain fivm automated querying Do not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system: If you are conducting research on machine
translation, optical character recognition or other areas where access to a large amount of text is helpful, please contact us. We encourage the
use of public domain materials for these purposes and may be able to help.
+ Maintain attributionTht GoogXt "watermark" you see on each file is essential for in forming people about this project and helping them find
additional materials through Google Book Search. Please do not remove it.
+ Keep it legal Whatever your use, remember that you are responsible for ensuring that what you are doing is legal. Do not assume that just
because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other
countries. Whether a book is still in copyright varies from country to country, and we can't offer guidance on whether any specific use of
any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book's appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner
anywhere in the world. Copyright infringement liabili^ can be quite severe.
About Google Book Search
Google's mission is to organize the world's information and to make it universally accessible and useful. Google Book Search helps readers
discover the world's books while helping authors and publishers reach new audiences. You can search through the full text of this book on the web

HONOBABT 8BCBBIABT TO THS 80CISTT.
LONDON:
1870.
M-lo
v. 3
At a Meeting of the Council of the ELableian Society, held at 8, Danes
Inn, London, W.O., on the 22nd day of June, 1870, the Hon. Henry Roper-
CuRZON tn the Chair, it was resolved that —
"The Visitation of Rutland in 1618, to be edited by the Honorary
Secretary, be the Second Publication for the Present Tear,"
Preface^
Op the small county of Rutland there are but two Visitations, viz. one made
in the year 1618, and the other in 1681-2.
The original of the first of these is in the College of Arms (marked C. 14),
where there is also a copy with additions by Vincent. There are also copies
in the British Museum, as mentioned below. The other Visitation (viz. that
of 1681-2) is in the College^ of Arms (marked K. 1.). Of this, it is believed,
there is no other copy out of that College.
The following volume contains the Visitation of 1618, with additions, and
is compiled from the manuscripts in the British Museum that relate to that
Visitation. The general text is taken from Harl. MS. 1558. The arms in
that MS. are tricked by Richard Munday, and the descents are considerably
extended beyond the period of the Visitation. The order of the pedigrees is
taken from the Harl. MS. 1094, which is the same order as that in the Col-
lege of Arms. The descents after page 26 are, however, not contained in
this last-named MS., but are entirely supplied from the MS. 1558, and are
probably copied fi^m the additions made by Vincent in his own MS., now
preserved in the College of Arms, as mentioned above.
The Visitation of Rutland in the Harl. MS. 1094 is written and the arms
tricked by John Withie, and commences at page 230 of that MS.
For the convenience of the members of this Society, a list of the pedigrees
in the Visitation of 1681 is here appended.

There are many references in the MSS. from which this volume has been
taken to the Visitation of Leicestershire : these have all been carefully tran-
scribed, and the number of the pages of that Visitation as printed in the
second volume of the Society's publications has been inserted in brackets.
The Index has been compiled by Mr. F. R. Armytage, of Balliol College,
Oxford, a member of the Society.

Sieport for t^t ^Tcar 1869-70.
On the 27tli of March, 1SC9, two Members of the Sodety'a Counoil
invited Beveral of their friends and correspondents to assist in the
formatioii of a Society, having fur tta special object the publication
of the Heralds' Visitationa of Counties and other important Ge-
nealogical Manuscripts. By the 28th of May. fifty-eight pereoiia
signified their willinKnesa to co-operate in the establishment of such
a Society, and at a Special Meeting held on that day at 8, Danes
Inn, the Honourable Hehbt Eopsk-Cuezon in tbe Chair, the Offi-
cers of the Society were appointed and the EuJes drawn out. The
succeaa that the Society met with was so great, that by the 2fitli of
July no fewer than one hundred Members had joined, and from that
time to the present this number has been gradually increasing, so
that now it exceeds one hundred and seventy Members.
This great sucoess may be attributed to the exertions of the
several Members of the Council, and to the literary status of many
of the original Members.
The Society has already published and distributed ' The Heraldic
YisitatioQ of London, taken by Robert Cooke, Clarenceui, in ISiiS,'
edited by Joseph Jackson HowAan, F.8.A., and Gbokoe J. Aaur-
TAOE, P.S.A.
Camden's ' Visitation of Leicestershire in 1019,' edited by John
Fethebston, F.8.A., will be ready for circulation in about a fort-
night. This is a large work, and contains 207 pages of pedigree
matter only. It will aiKo include facsimiles of several of the signa-
tures of the heads of families who entered their pedigrees at that
Visitation, together with a very elaborate armorial and general index.
SirQEOKOE F.Dtjckett, Bart., F.8. A., has offered to edit a Visita^
tion for the Society ; and the ' Visitation of Nottingham," to be edited
by Q, W. Mahshall, Ebu., LL.M., is ready for the press; and
the three Oxfordshire Viaitations are now being prepared by Mr.
William Henei Tuemeh, of Oiford.
The Soriety is now in a position to print Two Volumes a year, and
it is hoped that the addition of another hundred Memhers will
enable a third Tolume to be published ; and it is believed that the
issue of Three Volumes in return for the Guinea Subscription will
place the Society in the foremost ranks of such Associations of this
country.
The especial thanks of the Members are due to the Council of
the Surrey Archteo logical Society for so courteously placing their
Meeting-room at the disposal of the Harleian Council. Arrange-
ments are now being made for the payment of a few pounds per
annum to the Surrey Societv, as it is considered desirable that tuis
Society shall have a recognised place of meeting.
